UPSS Regulation

Comprehensive UPSS Services

At Caldera Environmental, we have proven industry experience in undertaking site-based service station and fuel storage facility investigations. Our comprehensive services include:

  • Sampling and Analysis Quality Plans (SAQPs): We develop detailed SAQPs to ensure that all sampling and analysis activities meet regulatory standards and project-specific requirements.

  • Preliminary Site Investigations (PSIs): We conduct initial assessments to identify potential contamination sources and evaluate site conditions. This involves reviewing historical data and conducting site visits to gather preliminary information.

  • Detailed Site Investigations (DSIs): Our team performs in-depth investigations, including soil, groundwater, and soil vapour sampling. These samples are analysed in accredited laboratories to determine the presence and concentration of contaminants.

  • Groundwater Well Installation: Correct installation of groundwater monitoring wells is essential for accurate data collection. Our team ensures wells are strategically placed and constructed to meet regulatory standards and project-specific requirements.

  • Slug Tests: We perform slug tests to estimate the hydraulic properties of aquifers. This involves measuring the water-level response in a control well following a sudden change in water level.

  • LNAPL Removal: We implement strategies for the identification and removal of light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs) from groundwater. This includes the use of specialised recovery techniques to mitigate environmental impacts.

  • Leak Detection and Monitoring: Implementing effective leak detection systems is critical for early identification of leaks. We design and install state-of-the-art monitoring systems that continuously track the integrity of UPSS components.

UPSS Validation Following Removal

Caldera Environmental also specialises in UPSS validation following the removal of underground storage tanks (USTs), lines and bowsers. This process is crucial to ensure that any residual contamination is identified and addressed. Our validation process includes:

  • Post-Removal Soil Sampling: After the removal of USTs, lines, and bowsers, we collect soil samples from the excavation areas to assess for any remaining contamination. This helps in identifying volatile compounds that may have been released during the removal process.

  • Groundwater Monitoring: We install groundwater monitoring wells to track any potential contamination that may have migrated from the removed UPSS components. Regular monitoring ensures that groundwater quality is maintained and any issues are promptly addressed.

  • Comprehensive Reporting: Our team compiles detailed reports documenting the findings of the validation process. These reports are submitted to regulatory authorities to demonstrate compliance with environmental regulations and to support any necessary remediation efforts.

Run a service station or site that stores fuel?

Underground Petroleum Storage Systems (UPSS) are essential for safely storing and distributing petroleum-based fuels across various sectors, including petrol stations, commercial and industrial facilities and even residential properties. These systems form a network of underground tanks, pipes, and related equipment designed to store, monitor, and dispense fuels like petroleum and diesel.

Importance of UPSS

If not properly managed, UPSS can leak, leading to soil, groundwater and soil vapour contamination. Leaks can occur due to corrosion, faulty installation, or damage to the tanks and pipes. Therefore, it is vital to implement robust monitoring and maintenance practices to detect and address leaks promptly.

Recent Projects

Caldera Environmental has recently completed UPSS environmental compliance investigations for developers, architects and service station operators in Newcastle, Sydney, Tamworth, Armidale, Brisbane and Mackay. These projects involved comprehensive site assessments, leak detection and remediation planning to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and protect environmental and public health.
