Detailed Site Investigation, Hazmat Survey, In Situ Waste Classification - Contemporary Heritage Speers Point Garage, Newcastle
Caldera Environmental, on behalf of Contemporary Heritage, conducted a comprehensive site investigation and UPSS at 155 Main Road, Speers Point, NSW 2284. This project included a Detailed Site Investigation (DSI), a Hazmat Survey and in situ Soil Waste Classification. To enable the sites future use as a mixed commercial property, a thorough assessment was required to be undertaken due to its historical use as a fuel station (with in situ UPSS) and mechanical workshop. The site is situated in the Newcastle Region, north of Sydney. All works were done under the management of Caldera Environmental CEnvP accredited staff.
Situated at a heritage listed site that has been storing and selling fuels since the 1920, the DSI aimed to evaluate the extent and type of potential soil and groundwater contamination. The investigation compared data against nationally recognsed, Tier 1 screening levels outlined in the NEPM (2013) guidelines. The Hazmat Survey, conducted by a Caldera Environmental Senior Environmental Consultant and Licensed Asbestos Assessor (LAA), involved a detailed visual inspection and sampling of materials suspected of containing asbestos and lead. No significant hazards like SMF, PCBs, or ODS were found.
The in situ Soil Waste Classification involved advancing nine boreholes to depths of 4.0 to 8.5 meters, targeting areas of potential contamination. Soil sample were obtained from areas across site and the installation of groundwater monitoring wells was undertaken to collect groundwater samples.
This comprehensive investigation ensures the site's safety and compliance for its proposed mixed commercial development, addressing all environmental and safety concerns. Works at site will continue with Caldera Environmental being a key source of guidance and technical advice.
